Football

1.0. Don't embarrass yourself, your teammates or your opponent.

1.1. Never call for an onside kick when leading by a lot of points. Rick Neuheisel, then a first-year coach at Colorado, did this against Oregon in the 1996 Cotton Bowl, starting a smoldering feud with Ducks coach Mike Bellotti. Leading 32-6 late in the game, the Buffs completed a long pass out of punt formation and went on to score a touchdown. "Those things tend to come around on you," Bellotti said.

1.15. Never call for a fake punt.

1.2. Always take a knee in the final moments when the game has been decided. This has as much to do with strategy as sportsmanship, thanksto a 1978 game known as the "Miracle of the Meadowlands." The Giants led the Eagles and were running out the clock when quarterback Joe Pisarcik opted to hand off rather than take a knee. He botched the exchange, the ball bounced to the turf, and cornerback Herman Edwards picked it up and went 26 yards for the winning touchdown.

1.3. Always remove your starters when you have a big lead in the fourth quarter. Particularly applicable in high school games, or when Georgia Tech plays Cumberland.

1.4. When you reach the end zone, pretend like you've been there before.

2.0. Play the game the right way.

2.1. Always establish the run.

2.2. Defense wins football games.

2.25. Football players make football plays. Not really a rule, but a timeworn Chuck Knox cliche.

2.3. Never take points off the scoreboard. Archaic. In a game at Indianapolis earlier this season, Ravens kicker Matt Stover made a 36-yard field goal, but Baltimore ended up accepting a defensive offside penalty and opted to go for it on 4th-and-4. Kyle Boller found Todd Heap in the end zone on the next play, and the Ravens were within 20-10 with 12:50 remaining. "On the road there are things you do that you wouldn't do at home," Ravens coach Brian Billick said of taking points off the board.

2.4 Never touch Tom Brady, or you will be suspended for the year and your team will automatically be disqualified.

Unless Brian Moorman happens to be your punter?

i think its BS how his injury triggered new rules. that being said, i dont think you should go for the head, or the knees. this applies to everyone.

I agree also, head shots and knees should never be touched, but the whole new QB rules about you can't go after the guy or knock him over is bullshit.

It's hard to stop momentum of a 300 pound guy moving forward right at the QB with 1 foot to spare. He is going to get hit.

It's not really bullshit so much as it makes sense for the NFL.

QBs are the most marketable players on the field, the face of the league. It is in the league's best interest to do as much as they can to protect them and keep them on the field.

I honestly didn't see anything wrong with the way football was played before. Qb's need to man up and take a hit, wear linebacker pads if you're going to get hit and stand in that pocket to make that pass just like Kelly did.

I don't think Marino even hurried his throws because a guy was bearing down on him, he would stand in the pocket and get drilled to make that play also.

But the whole if a DE or T is on the ground he can't get up and try to tackle the QB rule? Come on, really?

In the 08-09 season something like 18 of the 32 starting QBs missed at least a game due to injury. Now granted some of that is unavoidable, but that is a very bad business model for the NFL. You can't have over half of your most marketable and recognizable athletes wearing a headset on the sideline.

Not to mention the fact that the quarterback is the key to good entertaining football. So not only are the best athletes not playing, but the product is worse too.

How much would it suck to see Patrick Lalime, Yann Danis, Alex Auld, Brent Johnson, Manny Legace, Scott Clemmensen, Chris Osgood, Vesa Toskala, Peter Budaj, Josh Harding, Andrew Raycroft, Kari Lehtonen, Jonathon Bernier, Jason Labarbera, and Thomas Greiss get significant playing time because those teams' starters are missing significant time due to injury?

True and fair enough CV, but some of the rules are ridiculous.

I'd rather see harsh fines and suspensions from knee shots and headshots, not what we have now.

Basically it is making some players think twice about hitting the guy, which is not what we need in football.

Well I think that blame lies on the officials and not with the rule itself. The officials just aren't calling it right.
