We had two women on my ball hockey team last year. In our last playoff game, one of them high-sticked a guy on the other team, and he responded by saying "you fucking bitch". The guy tried to justify it by saying he calls guys bitches too, so what's the beg deal? Well, it's totally inappropriate and creates an anti-female environment for one. Just because you joke some way with your friends doesn't make it OK to act that way in all, or even most situations. If it was the "n word", no one would be arguing that it's OK to use on a message board like this. Why is it OK to be anti-woman or anti-gay or whatever jut because that's "accepted" in the sports world? I think people need to evaluate their language and get out of habits that are potentially offensive.

FYI the two women on my team did not return to the league the following season.

you know, there are a million other things i could have called her. complaining about "bitch" on a comment that was pretty clearly sarcasm is one thing. especially on a board that has historically been lax with censorship. one person gets bent out of shape about "bitch" and suddenly an pattern of anti women behavior is evident? what?

Remember all the hubbub over calling things "gay"? I'm not saying that was you Mike, in fact I remember you chiming in on the side of not using it and saying why you understood why Alex was offended. Well, this is pretty similar to that IMO in that saying bitch offended someone besides the author. You didn't mean to offend, but neither did the posters calling things gay. But both things did offend others whether that was intended or not. You might not be anti-woman, but that doesn't mean your sarcasm can't be taken that way. It's not like I think you did something terrible, but we can use this as an opportunity to realize how those types of terms are extremely touchy and can create an uncomfortable environment for others.

I am also kinda pissed at the sports world in general over un-inclusive behaviors right now as I'm a Dolphins fan and I'm shocked and appalled over this Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito bullshit that was allowed to happen. So that's probably affecting my sensitivity here.

Richie Incognito makes Riley Cooper look like a saint. That's some messed up shit.

There are two main reasons for that. First I was treated like an outcast for the most part growing up because I'm a nerd. People made it clear they didn't really want me around all that much unless they wanted to pick on me, so I learned early that what most people like is shit and that trying to "fit in" can often be a losing proposition. I learned to think the herd-mentality is stupid and that most people in the majority were mindless sheep. Well, growing up in Olean, most of the herd/majority that excluded me were Bills and Yankees fans, and I didn't want to be like them.

Second, watching the Bills "fans" in my area gave me one of my first lessons in hypocrisy. As a young kid, the Bills sucked and there were very few visible Bills fans in my town. Then as I got to be a teen, they drafted Kelly/Thomas/Smith/Reed/Tasker etc. and started getting good. All of a sudden everyone was a Bills fan, wearing zebra sweatpants and flying Bills flags from their houses. That rubbed me the wrong way and I got my first taste of fair-weather fans, so I said fuck that noise and went as anti-Bills as I could.

Oh, and then there was also the greatest quarterback of all time, Mr. Dan Marino.
