Parts of that are hard to do though, being that creationism says the Earth and everything on it is only a few thousand years old.

only if you're naive enough to believe that God's days in genesis were only one day as we perceive them

It's not a secular belief, it's the First Amendment.

Quote:
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution forbids the government from establishing religion. This mean that public schools can not give special privileges to any religion. Since creationism is a sectarian religious view, it cannot be given preferential treatment by any government body, including public schools.

and evolution is an atheistic belief, which gives support to atheism
Honestly, my view on this

present both sides of the argument, and leave it up for the student to accept whatever they wish

(for the record, im not a creationist. more on the God driven evolution side of things)

Not really...evolution is science. Creationism is not. Science is not a religion.

Evolution is not derived from atheism.

Normally I want both sides of an issue to be presented. But in this case it would be just wrong. Because there is only one legitimate side that is science.

In a social studies class, it would be different.

What about scientology? Not saying that everyone who believes in science is a scientology follower, but not everyone that believes in "God" (by whatever definition they believe a superior being exists) is religious.

Just because they use the word "science" in their name doesn't mean they have ANYTHING to do with science. Their name is all in marketing, much like "Intelligent Design" or "Creation science".

They believe in ancient aliens, bombed volcanos, ancient brain washing, "thetans" etc etc. Science fiction and science aren't the same game.

Yeah. The 'science' in Scientology isn't actual science. It's pseudo-techno babble that L Ron made up. Mostly a mish-mosh of legitimate technical terms that don't actually mean anything together.

The 'religion' is based on money, power, intimidation, and greed. It's unfair to actual religions to even compare them to Scientology.

So does that mean that my PHD in Star Trek the next Generation doesn't make me an actual scientist?

For a small donation of $200,000 it puts you on track to being an actual scientist. :)

One thing that I have noticed is that many religious people are a little fuzzy on what it means to be an atheist. It's exactly the same process that goes on in your head NY (I assume) when you think about the classical Greek Gods. Why don't you believe in them? Are they silly? Don't make sense? Are they too archaic? Well the same applies to how an atheist thinks of modern religious beliefs. They just don't make sense to them so it's not a choice, it's just a lack of belief. Just like you don't have faith in Zeus raining down lighting bolts from Mount Olympus, I don't have faith in God sending Jesus down here to die for our sins.

Many Christians think that atheist beliefs in science are somehow religious in nature when in fact it's the opposite. I believe in nothing supernatural, nothing that can't be tested. It's not an attack on you, it's just how I see the world much like how you see it having room for faith and God.

I never said I believed in a "God" of any form ;)

I believe the universe always has existed, and will always exist. Shit will change, but it will always "be". I think the universe is infinite, in my mind, it wouldn't make sense that at the very "end" of everything, you're either 1) back where you started, or 2) like a fish at the edge of a bowl. Either way, in my mind, is indicative of "somewhere else" to go.
